A newly opened convenience store on Chapel Lane, Formby has sparked concern among residents and local community groups. The Formby Civic Society has confirmed that it has submitted a complaint to Trading Standards following a number of objections raised about the shop’s advertising and signage.
According to the Civic Society, complaints have focused on the shop’s illuminated displays and, in particular, a large image on the front window which appears to show a young girl vaping. The Society says this image is “totally inappropriate for Formby Village” and may breach advertising laws designed to protect young people.
Formby Bubble understands that the Civic Society has reported the matter to Trading Standards for investigation. Concerns have also been raised about a CCTV camera which residents say is directed towards the public pavement outside the shop.
Below is the full letter of complaint sent by the Formby Civic Society’s Amenity Secretary, Mr David Irving:
Letter from Formby Civic Society
Subject: Concern About Inappropriate Advertising of Vaping in Formby Convenience Store
Location: No.16 Chapel Lane, Formby, L37 4DU
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to raise a concern about the advertising displayed at a newly opened convenience store in Formby. I think it is No 16 Chapel lane, Formby, L37 4DU. (Photo of Shop Front Attached)
The shop has a number of brightly illuminated pictures of products on its windows. However, on the glass panel next to the main entrance there is a large image of a young girl smoking with a vape device.
This appears to be a clear breach of advertising rules because:
The image depicts someone who appears to be under 25 years old using a vape.
The display is highly visible to children and young people passing by.
It could be seen as encouraging or normalising vaping among minors.
As I understand it, such advertising may contravene the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) rules and the restrictions enforced by Trading Standards.
I would be grateful if you could investigate this matter and take appropriate action to ensure that this type of advertising does not encourage underage vaping in the local community.
There is also concern about the CCTY camera pointing onto the pavement area outside the shop which I have had complaints about.
Please let me know if you require any further information from me.
Yours faithfully,
Mr David Irving
Amenity Secretary,
Formby Civic Society
Next Steps
The matter is now with Trading Standards, who are expected to review the complaint and determine whether the advertising and CCTV practices comply with UK regulations.
Formby Bubble will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
