RNLI lifeguards had a very special visitor on Thursday 21st August – a beautiful seal pup was spotted resting on the beach.
Sadly, lifeguards also witnessed someone picking up and handling the pup. This can be harmful both to the animal and the person, so it’s really important to know what to do if you ever come across a seal on the beach.
What to do if you see a seal pup:
🦭 Keep your distance – seals are naturally curious, but approaching too closely can cause stress.
🦭 Do not touch or move the pup – they can bite, and placing them back in the sea could put them in danger.
🦭 If the pup looks injured, unwell, or distressed, alert a lifeguard or beach ranger. If none are around, call:
📞 British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR): 01825 765546
📞 RSPCA: 0300 1234 999
📞 Or your local wildlife rescue centre.
Remember: adult seals also rest and socialise on beaches. Unless they appear injured, they’re usually just relaxing.
Seals are wonderful animals, and by giving them space we can help keep them safe. 🌊💙
