Woman tragically dies after being hit by train near Freshfield Station

A woman has sadly died after being hit by a train near Freshfield railway station over the weekend.
Emergency services were called to the railway at 10.49am on Saturday, 22nd August, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
British Transport Police has now confirmed that a woman was struck by the train and sadly died at the scene, despite the best efforts of paramedics and emergency services.
Police have confirmed that the circumstances surrounding her death are not being treated as suspicious, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
Merseyrail reported on Saturday morning that a person was believed to have been struck by a train travelling towards Southport. The incident resulted in significant disruption to the Southport line, with a number of services delayed or cancelled while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at what will be an incredibly difficult time. We also extend our thoughts to the train driver, passengers, railway staff and emergency service personnel affected by Saturday’s tragedy.
