The team at Go Outside have spoken of their anger and disappointment after a fire was allegedly started in the woodland area used by the much loved outdoor pursuits centre in Formby.
Go Outside, which provides outdoor activities and experiences for local children and young people, said the site had been left damaged and vandalised, but stressed that the most shocking part of the incident was the lighting of a fire in the woods.
The team said they were devastated by what happened and warned that the consequences could have been catastrophic had the flames spread through the forest.
In a statement, they said:
“We really don’t like to post this. We can deal with the place being trashed, which it was. What we can’t deal with is arson.
“This can have a damaging effect on everybody involved, not to mention the wildlife that lives in the woods. Luckily, on this instance, it didn’t spread.
“Setting fires in the forest is not acceptable.”
They added that they are not reporting the matter to police at this stage, but are asking parents to urgently speak to their children if they may know anything about the incident and to explain the very serious dangers involved.
The team also revealed the incident happened on the one evening security staff were away taking their son to the cinema.
This video below was shared following the incident also shows a stick being thrown directly towards the camera.
Thankfully, the fire was contained before it spread further, but the incident has sparked serious concern given the potentially devastating risk woodland fires pose to wildlife, nearby areas and members of the public.
The centre, which is highly regarded by many local families, has asked for respect for the woodland environment and for those who work hard to provide safe outdoor experiences for children in the community.
