Drivers across Formby and the whole Sefton area are being advised to plan ahead as a major programme of overnight maintenance works is set to begin at Switch Island.
National Highways has announced that essential resurfacing and improvement works will take place at the busy junction where the M57, M58 and several major A roads meet.
The project will include resurfacing the entire junction, refreshing road markings, replacing cat’s eyes, installing new traffic sensors, replacing missing signs, clearing vegetation and levelling areas ready for the roadworks. National Highways says the improvements will enhance both the appearance and condition of the junction.
Work is scheduled to take place overnight between 9pm and 6am on weekdays from Monday 15 June until Wednesday 2 September.
To allow the work to be carried out safely, a series of phased overnight lane and road closures will be in place. Different sections of the roundabout will be worked on in stages, with clearly signed diversion routes available via nearby A roads.
National Highways says it has coordinated the project alongside other nearby schemes, including the ongoing A5036 Park Lane junction upgrade, to help minimise disruption.
While some delays are expected, access for residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained at all times.
Motorists who regularly use Switch Island are being encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys during the works, particularly overnight.
National Highways has stated that every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum, but the improvements are considered essential to keep the road network safe and reliable for years to come.
