Hidden Danger at Formby Beach: Coastguard Sound Alarm Over Treacherous Mud Patch Near Lifeboat Road

A serious warning has been issued by HM Crosby Coastguard after a concerning discovery on Formby beach.

On Saturday, the Coastguard Local Knowledge Patrol team attended the beach following reports of a potentially hazardous patch of mud directly in front of the Lifeboat Road beach entrance.

The team deployed both their Coastguard Rescue Vehicle and Argocat to investigate the area.

They located a patch of deep mud approximately 250 metres straight out from the Lifeboat Road entrance. The area has been clearly identified in their images.
While on patrol, the team witnessed several people attempting to cross the mud — with some nearly becoming stuck. Thankfully, no one required rescue, but the situation could very easily have escalated.
This type of mud can act like quicksand. What appears to be firm sand can suddenly give way, trapping legs and making it extremely difficult to escape without assistance. With incoming tides and colder conditions, situations like this can turn dangerous very quickly.

If you are heading to Formby beach:
• Stick to well used, firm sand routes
• Pay close attention to warning and information signs
• Avoid isolated or unfamiliar areas
• Never attempt to cross visible mud patches
If you get into difficulty, dial 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.
Please take this warning seriously and share to keep others safe.
