Frank Rourke's Report from Formby Junior Sports Club
It was another excellent weekend of football at Formby Junior Sports Club. There were some outstanding performances by some of the FJSC Representative teams and the Inter Club Section continues to gather momentum with first class coaching and exciting matches. New members are joining in all age groups and there is room for many more boys who would like to join this very happy group.
REPRESENTATIVE TEAM MATCHES
The FJSC Under 16 team produced a brilliant team display to win 3-1 away against a strong Greenloons team. It was an outstanding effort particularly as FJSC could only field nine players due to illness and injury. Greenloons had a full complement of players available with a starting line up of eleven players and five substitutes. FJSC set up well and all the boys played with great determination. Steven Mordaunt was again an inspiration, driving his team forward relentlessly and winning possession. Every boy gave five star displays and it was fitting that two of FJSC’s goals were scored by Steven Mordaunt. Another hero in this team of heroes was Marc Whitelaw who constantly chased the ball down and also managed to get on the scoresheet with a fantastic headed goal.
This was a superb team performance and every player deserves a mention as the team worked together and fought so hard for the result. Well done to Samuel Colbourne, Matteo Heaney, Robert Hersey, Luke Honour, Steven Mordaunt, Kyle Phillips, Sam Trappe, Marc Whitelaw and James Hilton. FJSC is very proud of you all.
FJSC ‘s Under 12 Blacks Sunday team played Southport and Birkdale in the Premier Division’s top of the table clash. The match was very even in the first half but after twenty-six minutes S. and B. took the lead scoring from a corner. In the second half the two defences held the two lively forward lines until S. and B. added a second goal from a free kick. FJSC kept going and Dominic Maxwell pulled a goal back late on from a penalty kick but there was no time to score again and S.and B. held on for a 2-1 victory.
FJSC Under 11s Blacks travelled to Ormskirk to take on TQ Academy Porto. The game was switched to an all-weather 4G pitch to take account of the soft ground conditions at the original venue.
The Blacks kicked off the match and started very strongly pinning the home team back in their own half with both Ollie Dean and Patrick Fleming controlling the midfield, and it wasn’t long before FJSC made the break through. Henry Renton scored the first goal of the game and his first for the team after starting in a more advanced position. More goals followed as Patrick Fleming scored with a curled, long range effort. Henry Renton completed a first half hat trick with two more well taken finishes. Abe Rice scored following a run through the middle and TQ scored an unfortunate own goal following a corner.
The second half saw the Blacks playing into the wind but they coped well with the conditions and continued to have the majority of possession. Abe Rice completed his own hat trick after scoring two more goals early in the half before Isaac Dey scored his first for the team with a lobbed finish over the TQ goalkeeper. Henry Renton added one more goal to his account and Thomas Donnelly completed the scoring with a well taken finish coming in off the right wing. It was a very hard working and confident team performance. The man of the match was Henry Renton who caught the eye with his overall performance and goal contributions.
FJSC Under 11 Whites played a very good Southport FC team. The Whites made a very determined effort but found their opponents to be a little stronger on the day. Man of the match was Niall Brennan.
FJSC Under 9 Whites had a close match with Churchtown Jags. FJSC opened the scoring in the first half with a fine finish from Jacob Davies. Despite some very good defending from Nate Davies, and some excellent goalkeeping from Matthew Crutchley the Jags drew level just before half time. Playing against a very strong wind in the second half the Under 9’s found it difficult to mount many attacks and gradually Churchtown got the upper hand.
FJSC Under 8 Reds played FJSC Under 8 Whites in a competitive game. FJSC U8 Whites took an early lead but the Reds hit back with a well taken shot by Zac McHugh after a good pass through from Joel Wright. The Whites scored again to take the lead into half time. The Reds played with real belief in themselves and after half time scored a further two times with Joel Wright and Tom Murphy both scoring good goals. There were strong performances in goal from James Hannan in the first half and Mason Todd after half time with both making a number of saves and good distribution to the outfield players. Other game highlights for the Reds included a good debut for Jenson Gray, crucial defensive tackling by both Isaac Pepper and Joel Craven in an overall strong team performance. Man of the match for the Reds was Mason Todd. Although the Reds played so well the Whites kept slightly ahead.
FJSC Under 8 Blacks were in action against Southport Athletic Blacks and it turned out to be a great match from start to finish. Southport went into a two goal lead before Huey Stevenson pulled a goal back scoring with a fine shot from distance. Rory Rankine then equalised for FJSC but in this topsy-turvy game Athletic took the lead again just before half time. A confidence boosting team talk at the interval brought about a good response from FJSC. Goalkeeper Harrison Hughes and Finn McDerby in defence made sure that Southport did not extend their lead further. Jack Williams, Oliver Hall-Gleeson and Joseph Kenyon worked tirelessly in midfield as FJSC pressed forward. In an exciting finale Rory Rankine scored two great goals to complete his hat-trick and change the outcome of the match. Everyone is looking forward to the return fixture at Deansgate Lane as it is always a very good match when these two teams play each other.
FJSC Under 7 Whites travelled to Crosby to play against a very well organised Crosby Stuart team. FJSC started well and scored twice. Only for some brilliant saves from the Crosby goalkeeper the score could have favoured FJSC more. The second half began with a three goal comeback from Crosby Stuart. In an exciting end to end last few minutes of this now thrilling match six more goals were scored including four from the Whites. Scoring for FJSC were Jack Haggart, Jack Hansen and Seb Hodgson.
