Environment Agency issues flood alert for River Alt as water levels expected to rise overnight

Residents in Formby and surrounding areas are being urged to remain vigilant this evening after the Environment Agency issued a flood alert for the River Alt, warning that rising water levels could lead to flooding overnight.
The flood alert, issued on Friday 23 October, covers the River Alt and surrounding watercourses stretching from Huyton to Hightown, including Formby, Maghull, Aughton, Sefton, Lunt, Kirkby and Fazakerley.
Following recent heavy rainfall, river levels are forecast to continue rising throughout Friday evening, with water levels expected to reach their highest point at approximately midnight.
The Environment Agency has warned that flooding is possible, particularly on low lying land and roads close to rivers and other watercourses.
Areas around Formby could be affected.
Although the alert covers a wide area, residents living near the River Alt and surrounding drainage channels in Formby are being advised to take extra care.
Low lying fields, riverside footpaths, roads and areas close to watercourses may be particularly vulnerable as water levels increase.
A flood alert means that flooding is possible and residents should be prepared. It does not necessarily mean that homes or businesses will be flooded.
Environment Agency issues safety advice
The Environment Agency is continuing to monitor rainfall and river levels throughout the evening and has issued the following advice to residents:
Avoid walking along low lying footpaths close to rivers and streams.
Take extra care around bridges and crossings near watercourses.
Never attempt to walk, cycle or drive through floodwater.
Be particularly cautious when travelling along rural roads, where standing water may be difficult to see in darkness.
Keep an eye on local weather forecasts and travel updates.
Residents living in areas prone to flooding should ensure they are prepared in case conditions deteriorate.
Motorists are reminded that even relatively shallow floodwater can cause vehicles to lose control or become stranded.
The agency has confirmed that it will continue monitoring conditions overnight and will provide further information if the situation changes.
The next scheduled update is expected by 10am on Saturday 24 October, although an earlier update may be issued if necessary.
