Police introduce two dispersal zones in Formby following reports of antisocial behaviour

Merseyside Police have announced that two dispersal zones will be introduced in Formby this weekend following reports of antisocial behaviour involving groups of young people.
The dispersal orders will come into effect at 5pm today, Friday 23 October, and remain in place until 5pm on Sunday 25 October.
The measures follow recent reports of large groups of youths setting off fireworks, intimidating residents, causing damage to shops and becoming involved in fights.
Police say the orders are intended to prevent further incidents, protect local businesses and reassure residents who have been affected by the behaviour.
Areas covered by the dispersal orders
Zone One…
The first dispersal zone covers the footpath north of Hawksworth Drive, Brackenway, Paradise Lane, Wrigleys Lane, Timms Lane to the western boundary of Gores Lane, Piercefield Road, Green Lane to the southern boundary of Cable Street, Watchyard Lane and the eastern extent of Formby Bypass.
Zone Two…
The second dispersal zone covers Long Lane to Freshfield Road, Wicks Lane to Woodlands Road, south to Kirklake Road, the eastern extent of Formby railway station, the footpath south to Hoggs Hill Lane, Altcar Lane, the eastern extent of Liverpool Road, north to Cross Green and Church Road, returning to Long Lane.
What do the dispersal orders mean?
The orders have been introduced under Section 34 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
The legislation gives authorised police officers and police community support officers the power to direct individuals to leave a designated area if their behaviour is causing, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress, or contribute to crime or disorder.
Anyone instructed to leave may be prohibited from returning to the designated area for up to 48 hours.
Failure to comply with a lawful dispersal direction is a criminal offence and could result in arrest.
The orders do not prevent residents, shoppers or visitors from going about their normal activities.
Increased police presence across Formby…
Temporary Inspector Chris Hughes said:
“The dispersal orders are just one measure we are taking to stop youth-related crime and anti-social behaviour in Formby.”
“There will also be more officers in the area to not only identify offenders, but also keep our law-abiding residents safe from this sort of behaviour.”
Police are also urging parents and guardians to take an active interest in where their children are spending their evenings and who they are associating with.
Inspector Hughes added: “If you are a parent or guardian of a child or young person please take the time to find out exactly where they are and who they’re with, to ensure they don’t become involved in situations which could cause disruption or distress.”
Residents encouraged to report incidents:
Merseyside Police are encouraging anyone who witnesses antisocial behaviour, criminal damage, intimidation or other offences to report their concerns.
Information provided by residents can help officers identify those responsible and prevent further incidents.
Anyone wishing to report antisocial or criminal behaviour can contact Merseyside Police through its social media accounts on Facebook or X at @MerPolCC, through the force’s website or by calling 101.

The dispersal orders will remain in force until 5pm on Sunday 25 October, with an increased police presence expected across the affected areas throughout the weekend.
