Frank Rourke's Report from Formby Junior Sports Club

Formby Junior Sports Club’s weekend highlights include FJSC Under 12’s Sunday team reaching the Craven Minor League semi-final. Also there were more impressive results from the Under 9’s and Under 8 Reds plus a nine goal thriller when FJSC Under 11 Whites played FJSC Under 11 Blacks. In addition there was a very good attendance at the Inter Club Section on Saturday with new members once again joining.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM MATCHES

FJSC Under 12 Blacks defeated unbeaten Southport and Birkdale United in the Quarter Final of the John Disley Trophy. FJSC took the lead midway through the first half when a whipped in corner by Charlie Garvey resulted in an own goal from an unfortunate S. and B. defender. It soon became 1-1 in the second half when FJSC conceded an own goal themselves. The match ebbed and flowed as the two teams went in search for the all- important second goal. In the fifty-sixth minute FJSC went ahead when Dominic Maxwell scored a very good individual goal. With great discipline in defence and determination FJSC Under 12’s held on to their 2-1 lead for the remaining few minutes of the match. In the semi-final FJSC will play Southport Trinity Blues next Sunday at home.

FJSC Under 16 Blacks were also in cup action against high flying Hesketh Colts Blue. At full time the score was tied at 2-2 with Josh King and Steven Mordaunt scoring for FJSC. Extra time followed and Hesketh Colts scored to win 3-2. It was a very good effort from the Under 16’s.

FJSC Under 12’s played Northern Blue in the Hightown League. FJSC’s Berat Ulusoy and Charlie Garvey scored one goal each in the first half to lead 2-1 at half time. Northern were the stronger team in the second half and went on to score three goals in the space of three minutes to win 4-2.

FJSC Under 11 Blacks were back in league action and played a in a club derby match against FJSC Whites.

The Blacks started brightly and scored early on when Abe Rice ran onto a through ball and calmly finished low to the goalkeepers’ right. The Whites responded well and quickly replied with a goal of their own and then added a second following a lapse at the back for the Blacks. The Blacks regrouped and Patrick Fleming scored two more goals before half time, the first which he cleverly made for himself with a good piece of skill and the second came from a run from Ollie Dean who jinxed his way through the middle before finding Patrick in space on the left, who finished well to claim his second of the match.

The second half continued in a similar vein with both teams creating chances and playing exciting attacking football. The Whites equalised again early only for the Blacks to retake the lead with a well-timed volley by Josh Kearney who scored at the back post from a corner. More goals were to follow as first the Whites drew level for a third time, after a corner deflected in for an unfortunate own goal. The Blacks took the lead again when Patrick Fleming swung in a free kick and Thomas Donnelly clipped the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper. There was still time for more chances for both teams but the Blacks goalkeeper Riley Jennings made himself the hero on the day, when he superbly saved a penalty towards the end of the match, and securing the Blacks the win in the process. Man of the match went to Riley Jennings for his match winning save, and overall confident and assured display in goal. It was a memorable match and all the boys from both FJSC teams deserve great credit.

FJSC Under 9 Whites produced another very good team display this time against Southport FC. Ephraim Sutton scored his first goal of the season with a well struck shot. Archie Weir doubled FJSC’s lead before half time. Southport scored two goals early in the second half to level the scoreline. In the last few minutes FJSC once again got on top and their efforts were rewarded with two goals from Isaac Jones. Man of the match for an all round performance was Adam Patel.

FJSC Under 8 Reds played at home against Southport Athletic Whites. Southport held a slender lead at the interval but after a confidence boosting half time team talk the Reds took control in the second half scoring three more goals to lead at the end of an exciting match. Zac McHugh scored a hat trick and there were two goals for Tom Murphy and a poacher’s goal for Joel Craven. Mason Todd gave a good account of himself with good wing play. Man of the match was Joel Wright who alongside James Hannan and Isaac Pepper produced a good disciplined defensive display.
