Frank Rourke's Report from Formby Junior Sports Club

Formby Junior Sports Club’s Under 16’s got back to winning ways with a very good team performance. In another busy weekend for the Representative teams there was also impressive displays from FJSC Under 9’s, FJSC Under 7’s and FJSC’s Under 6’s. Meanwhile the very keen young footballers in the Inter Club Section continue to develop their skills and the standard of play in all the exciting friendly matches is improving each week.

FJSC Under 16’s played away at Southport Athletic. Callum Hampton and new goalkeeper Brandon Coughlan made their debuts and were quick to settle into their new team. Jack Rummens played well in the centre of midfield. Luke Honour scored two well-taken goals and Bobby Hersey also scored an important goal in the 3-2 victory. Brandon Coughlan made some fantastic saves which helped to secure the close fought win.

FJSC Under 12 Blacks won 2 nil against Town Green in the Hightown League to stay in equal third place. After eleven minutes Callum Gray gave FJSC the lead. The match was very even but just after half time FJSC extended their lead when Harrison McGrath scored with a header from a Charlie Garvey corner. Man of the match was Luca Massey.

On Sunday FJSC Under 12 Blacks played league leaders Southport and Birkdale. It was another very close match between the top two teams in the Craven Minor League’s Premier Division. S and B scored the only goal of the match with a headed goal in the 43rd minute. Isaac Burns was man of the match.

FJSC Under 9 Blacks played Southport Trinity in the first league game of the New Year. Southport Trinity scored from a free kick to take the lead early on. FJSC regrouped and Nate Daniels scored the equaliser shortly before half time from an excellent corner taken by Zac Hooson-Jones. FJSC applied the pressure in the second half and were rewarded with three well-taken goals. Isaac Jones scored twice before Nate Daniels added another. There were many man of the match candidates but this week it went to Joshua Davidson for an excellent defensive display.

FJSC Under 8 Whites Saturday team enjoyed a nine goal thriller with Muniflex in the Hightown League and on Sunday played very well against Redgate.

The encounter between FJSC Under 8 Blacks and Crosby Stuart was a tremendous tussle. Crosby Stuart scored in the first half despite a wonderful attempt to keep the ball out by FJSC’s goalkeeper Harrison Hughes. Great defending by Oliver Hall- Gleeson and Ryan Lamb prevented Crosby Stuart increasing their lead in the first half. After the interval the midfield combination of Finn McDerby, Jack Williams and Huey Stevenson helped to gain the upper hand as FJSC pressed for an equaliser. Strikers Rory Rankine and Joseph Kenyon tried in vain to create opportunities only to be thwarted by Crosby’s very good central defender. Despite being unable to score the goal they needed the FJSC Blacks team showed just how much they have improved as a team this season.

FJSC Under 8 Reds came up against an in form Churchtown Athletic who dominated the first half and went into a commanding lead. Joel Wright in only his second appearance in goal made a series of excellent saves. It was a vastly improved performance by the Reds in the second half. Goalkeeper James Hannan produce some fine clearances. Isaac Pepper and Mason Todd produced some good defensive tackling and Tom Murphy tried to reduce the deficit with some direct attacking play. Zac McHugh gave a man of the match performance which was topped off with a fine long range free kick goal straight into the top corner of the net.

FJSC Under 7 Whites were in action against Burscough Dynamo Greens and produced another excellent team display . After a tight opening ten minutes when both teams took a moment to find their rhythm after the Christmas break FJSC took the lead. Seb Hodgson scored his first hat-trick of the season with some cool finishing and further goals came from all around the team. The in form Harry O’Donnell bagged a brace, while a lovely team goal from Jack Hansen and a mazy dribble solo effort from Jack Haggart adding gloss to what was an impressive performance from all the boys.

FJSC Under 6’s played Quarry Green. FJSC’s goals were scored by Jacob Givin, Archie Phenna and Finley Duffin. Man of the match Daniel Johnson had a great game. Matthew Miles also defended well. Once again the goalkeeping duties were shared between Oliver Parrish, Finley Duffin and Daniel Johnson with all three boys making some fine saves.
