Maryland Care Home on School Lane in Formby has been rated “Requires Improvement” following its latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The report, published in early October, follows visits made by inspectors during August and September 2025.
The CQC found that the home, which provides residential care for up to 30 people including those living with dementia, did not consistently meet regulations around safety, management and governance. While inspectors observed that residents were cared for by kind and compassionate staff and that the registered manager was approachable and actively involved in day-to-day running, they also identified several areas requiring urgent improvement.
One of the main concerns raised was around the safe management of medicines, with inspectors finding records that were incomplete or unclear, creating potential risks for residents. As a result, on 4th September 2025, the CQC issued a formal Warning Notice to Maryland Care Home, requiring immediate action to rectify the failings in how medication is stored, recorded and administered.
Other issues highlighted included missed or overdue health and safety checks, gaps in risk assessments and care plans, and insufficient evidence of learning from previous incidents. Inspectors noted that while systems were in place, they were not always followed or effectively monitored, leading to inconsistencies in care and record keeping.
Despite these findings, residents and relatives told inspectors that staff were caring, respectful and often went above and beyond to help. Many praised the manager and her team for their hard work and positive attitudes, although some families said they would like to see more organised activities and opportunities for residents to engage and socialise.
Maryland Care Home is operated by Savoy Care Home Limited, with Mrs. Suraya Devi Bacon as the registered manager. The provider has said that steps are being taken to address all areas of concern and to ensure that standards improve swiftly.
The CQC will carry out follow-up checks to confirm that the required improvements have been made and that residents’ safety is being properly protected. Families are encouraged to continue sharing feedback with the CQC to help monitor progress.
While the findings are disappointing, there remains a strong sense of dedication among the team at Maryland Care Home, and with the right support and action, there is hope that the service can return to the standards residents and families expect in the heart of our Formby community.
