Flood Alert Issued for Formby as River Levels Rise

A flood alert has been issued for Formby and surrounding areas today, Thursday 20 August, as rising river levels could lead to flooding.

The Environment Agency issued an update at 9:08am warning that flooding is possible today, particularly on low lying land and roads close to rivers and other watercourses.

The alert covers the River Alt and other watercourses from Huyton to Hightown, including #Formby, #Maghull, #Kirkby, #Fazakerley, #Aughton, #Sefton and #Lunt.

The Environment Agency says it is closely monitoring the situation and has advised people to avoid low lying footpaths and bridges close to local watercourses while river levels remain high.

The flood alert map shows a significant area to the east of Formby within the alert zone, extending through Great Altcar and towards Maghull and Lunt.

A flood alert means that flooding is possible and residents should be prepared. It is not the same as a flood warning, which is issued when flooding is expected.

The Environment Agency is due to provide a further update by 1pm today, Thursday 20 August, or sooner if the situation changes.

Residents travelling through low lying areas are advised to take extra care and never attempt to drive or walk through floodwater.
