If you’ve lived in Formby for any length of time, there’s a good chance the name Prides rings more than a few bells – and possibly brings back memories of salon chairs, laughter, and the warm welcome of a beloved village institution. This week, we’re delighted to feature Prides Hair Salon as our Formby Bubble Business of the Week – not just for its long-standing roots in the community, but also for its inspiring journey into a bold new era.

Originally known as John Prides, the salon was founded by the late John Pride, who ran the business with talent, integrity, and a dedication that made it one of the most trusted salons in the area. John sadly passed away around 2001, but his legacy lived on. When local hairdresser Angela Howells took over shortly after his death, she honoured his memory by keeping the well-loved name – and Prides continued to thrive under her care.
In 2011, one of the salon’s rising stars, Jennifer Rainford, made a bold move and set off for a new life in Australia with her partner, Paul. Over the next five years, Jen trained and worked in some of the top boutique salons along the East Coast – from Brisbane to Sydney – refining her skills and participating in elite colour and session styling workshops with some of the industry’s leading professionals. Despite loving her Aussie adventure, she always knew she’d return to the Bubble one day.

That return came in 2016, when Jen rejoined Prides, much to the delight of loyal clients and her proud mentor, Angela. As Angela said at the time, “I always knew Jen would come back to us… now I can take it a bit easier and let our great team continue to bring quality hairdressing and service to all our clients, old and new!”

Fast forward to 2022, and Jennifer took the reins as the new owner of Prides Hairdressing Formby Ltd, ushering in a new era of creativity, professionalism, and passion – all built on the foundations of its cherished past. Today, Jen leads a talented team from their familiar base at 35 Chapel Lane, offering cutting-edge colour work, precision cutting, luxury treatments, and tape-in extensions in a warm, community-focused environment.

From John’s trusted hands to Angela’s nurturing leadership, and now Jennifer’s globally trained expertise, Prides Hair Salon is a perfect example of how tradition and innovation can come together to create something truly special.
We’re proud to name Prides as this week’s Business of the Week – not just for the beautiful transformations they create every day, but for being a business that has truly grown with Formby.
