Altcar Road now completely closed to traffic in both directions

Altcar Road is now completely closed to through traffic, several days after the major closure was originally expected to begin, with further works on Alt Road and Flaxfield Road adding to disruption in the area.

The closure means motorists cannot currently travel from the Formby Bypass along Altcar Road into Formby, or travel out of Formby along Altcar Road towards Tesco and the bypass.

The road is completely closed from Glenmarsh Way, with barriers preventing vehicles from continuing through.

The closure had originally been advertised as beginning on Monday 10 August, but Altcar Road remained open and the expected works did not begin as planned.

The road has now closed, with the latest roadworks information showing the United Utilities works as in progress and scheduled to continue until 11.59pm on Friday 21 August.

United Utilities works on Altcar Road

The closure is for utility repair and maintenance works being carried out by United Utilities Water.

The current permit covers Altcar Road from 13 August until 21 August, with a full road closure authorised and a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order in place.

Although the permit now shows the works as having started on 13 August, the road was not completely closed to traffic until Friday 14 August.

United Utilities does not publish details of the exact nature of these works through the roadworks system.

For motorists, the important point is that Altcar Road is currently not a through route between Formby and the bypass.

Traffic lights also in place for Alt Road

Adding to the disruption, separate works are currently taking place on Alt Road, where temporary traffic lights are now affecting motorists travelling from Altcar Road towards Alt Road.

These works are being carried out by Scottish Power Energy Networks and are scheduled from 12 August until 20 August.

They are listed as utility repair and maintenance works.

Although the road itself is not listed as closed, traffic management is now in operation in connection with the works.

Flaxfield Road also closed from Altcar Road

There is another complication for motorists in the same area. Flaxfield Road is also closed where drivers would normally turn into it from Altcar Road.

Scottish Power Energy Networks is carrying out separate utility repair and maintenance works there, with the road closure beginning on Friday 14 August and currently scheduled to remain in place until Thursday 20 August.

More Altcar Road disruption still to come

And motorists should be aware that this may not be the end of the disruption.

Once the current United Utilities closure is completed, another separate closure of Altcar Road is currently scheduled to begin on Monday 24 August.

That closure, being carried out by Sefton Council, is for carriageway reconstruction works between Formby Bypass and Alt Road and is scheduled to continue until Friday 28 August.

It means this major route into Formby could face disruption for much of the remainder of August.

For now, anyone travelling in this part of Formby should allow additional time and be prepared to use an alternative route, particularly if they would normally use Altcar Road to travel between Formby and the bypass.

Current works affecting the area:

Altcar Road: Completely closed for United Utilities works until 21 August.

Alt Road: Scottish Power works and temporary traffic lights until 20 August.

Flaxfield Road: Road closure for Scottish Power works until 20 August.

Altcar Road: Further Sefton Council carriageway reconstruction closure currently scheduled from 24 to 28 August.

We will continue to monitor the works and update residents if any of the closure dates change.
