Altcar Road closure extended again into next week as works remain unfinished

  • 2 min read

Altcar Road will now remain completely closed to traffic until Tuesday 8th September, after the completion date for the ongoing United Utilities works was extended yet again.

The road had most recently been expected to reopen following works scheduled until Friday 4th September, but complications with the repair of a collapsed sewer mean the work remains unfinished.

The latest roadworks information now shows the closure continuing until 11.59pm on Tuesday 8th September.

Dowhigh had been due to resurface the carriageway on behalf of Sefton Council once the United Utilities work was completed. This has now been postponed until the utility works are finished.

The continued closure is causing considerable frustration for residents and motorists as Altcar Road is one of the main routes connecting Formby with the A565 Formby Bypass.

With Altcar Road unavailable as a through route, motorists travelling into and out of Formby are currently heavily reliant on Liverpool Road and Southport Road.

This is putting additional pressure on both routes, particularly during busy periods, with queues and delays as traffic is funnelled towards the remaining main access points.

The closure remains in place around the Glenmarsh Way area and is in force at all times, preventing motorists from using Altcar Road as a through route between Formby and the bypass.

Emergency access will continue to be maintained and there is no footway closure currently listed.

The works began in August and have now continued considerably longer than originally anticipated. The latest official information lists United Utilities Water as responsible for the utility repair and maintenance works, with Sefton Council as the highway authority.

For residents who have already endured several weeks of disruption, this latest extension will inevitably add to the frustration.

Anyone travelling into or out of Formby over the coming days should allow additional time, particularly during peak periods on Liverpool Road and Southport Road.

The current scheduled end date is now Tuesday 8th September, although this remains dependent on the completion of the United Utilities repair.

Formby Bubble will continue to keep residents updated on any further changes and when Altcar Road finally reopens.
