Formby local on how setting sail across the world helped keep her positive during pandemic

Six months ago, the world hit the pause button. The new normal is trying to keep life ticking over but many of us feel like it’s never going to feel the same. Well that’s because it’s not. Yet all news about the new way of living does not have to be bad.

Formby, a quiet village which has bred adventure into many.

My name is Amy and I grew up in Formby. Attending St. Luke’s Primary School and then to Range High School until I was nearly 18 years old. That seems like only yesterday…

My adventurous spirit told me to move on. So I listened. I moved to Austria when I was 21. Working in service, skiing in the Alps and generally living my 20’s with a smile on my face and not a penny in my pocket. We ended up rescuing a little Hungarian mutt who comes with us absolutely everywhere…and I mean everywhere!

That is my history until 18 months ago when, with my partner, we packed our bags and moved on. Moved onto the new dream of sailing around the world. Lots has happened, the good times and the bad. Covid-19 has not stopped us! (Only the broken boom, battery poisoning, diesel bug, windless failure and of course the weather)

No, I had never even stepped foot on a sailboat before in my life. Yes, I have been called crazy, naïve and downright delusional thinking I could do such a thing as sail around the world. But I’ve also felt brave and courageous and well… downright delusional, thinking I could do such a thing. But I have been doing this now for over a year.

We wanted to share our experiences with our families, friends and the people who have the same dream. So, we started documenting it on our YouTube channel with weekly updates. In doing so we’ve made some great friends along the way and found that the sailing community is something special. We are currently in the Canary Islands. Complying with local laws. Travel restrictions. Heck we were even stuck on an island we didn’t know for 3 months.

Anyway. I don’t want to ramble. I just wanted to send a message out to say. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. Live YOUR life. Make YOUR dreams come true! Don’t get upset that things will more than likely never be the same again. Look forward. Find your adventure and get planning!
