A person has been killed after being struck by a train near Freshfield station

A person was killed after being hit by a Merseyrail train between Freshfield and Ainsdale this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident at 9:20am - during peak travel times.
The person, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead by medics. Officers are working to identify victim and inform family.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Our officers were called to an area near Freshfield at 9.20am on Thursday, 21 January following reports of a person being hit by a train.
“Colleagues form Merseyside Police and the North West Ambulance Service also attended but a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.
“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
A Merseyrail spokesman said the incident had caused severe delays and cancellations on the Southport to Hunts Cross line.
Northern line services were suspended between Hall Road and Southport while a rail replacement service was arranged.
