Merseyside's first FootGolf course has opened at Formby Golf Centre

Players don't need clubs or golf balls

A golf course with a difference has opened in Formby.

Players will not use clubs, and there are no golf balls. Instead, players will kick a football around the course, with the aim of putting the ball in a 21" cup, with the fewest number of shots.

The course opened at Formby Golf Centre yesterday - November 28th. The game is played with a standard size five football, and the holes are shorter than on a golf course because footballs do not travel as far as a golf ball.

Organisers hope to attract Formby's legion of golf and football fans to try something that merges both sports. Mike Mawdsley, who owns Formby Golf Centre, said: "Not everyone can hit a ball but everyone can kick a ball, come down and try for a goal in one."

What is Footgolf?

Footgolf is played on a golf course using a size 5 football. The object of the game is to get the ball into the hole using only your feet in the fewest number of shots possible. Footgolf is a very 'addictive' sport - it combines the best of football and golf, two of the most popular sports in the world. The beauty of the game lies in your being able to strategically combine power and precision every time you play footgolf and, it is open to everyone.
