Thornton relief road walk for Jospice

Participants can pay to walk the new road and raise money for charity, too.

Over 300 people are set to take part in a charity walk along the as yet unopened Thornton relief road.

Participants will walk the ‘quietest road in the country’ in order to raise funds for Jospice which is one of the oldest charities in the area.

A donation of £5 per person grants entry to walk on the road, with each walker being presented with a special certificate on the day.

The late Father Francis O’Leary opened the doors of the Thornton hospice in 1974 to care for local people with a life limiting or terminal illness. Thousands of patients have since received the loving care of the nursing and care staff since. The charity have touched so many lives.

On 16th May, like any other day there will be 1440 minutes in the day – can we hope that 1440 people will take go along to walk on a stretch of the road and help support the running costs of the hospice for that day – a tall order but together as a community we can make it work.

Pat Murphy from Jospice said: “We are all looking forward to seeing as many friends as possible coming along to join us for this special event. We know we cannot repeat this event each year it’s a one off, so let’s make a great day of it.

"We have been watching the construction of the road each day as it is so close to Jospice, so we are delighted that Balfour Beatty have allowed us this unique opportunity.

"A very big thank you to Ascot Properties for sponsoring this event, to Balfour Beatty for their support, and also to our local community being so understanding that we have had to delay the date a couple of times. Looking forward to seeing a great turnout on the morning”

The road will be open from 11am – 3pm on the day so turn up any time from 11am to walk on the quietest road in the country. The route will be from Brickwall Lane towards Switch Island a total of 4km. Wheelchairs, pushchairs and the family dog all very welcome and small children can walk free of charge.
