Formby Historian Ann Oakes is to read her grandfather's letter sent home from the trenches.

She will deliver a lecture about her own family’s experience of World War I....

Ann Oakes will deliver a lecture about her own family’s experience of World War I. From Eden to Gallipoli is based on letters her grandfather Charles Crowther sent home from the war. Ann, from Formby, will also talk about her grandfather’s home village in Worcestershire, and his friendship with Stanley Baldwin. Ann discovered the letters when delving into her family’s archives. She has transcribed the material and written a biography, which will be published by History Press. The talk will take place at Formby Books in Formby village. Tony Higginson, who helped organise the talk, said: “Our key aim is to give folks the chance to find out about the affects of things like the war.” The event will take place at Formby Books from 7pm on Sunday August 31.
