Construction has now begun on Formby’s new Chindits Memorial, marking an important milestone in the town’s efforts to honour the brave soldiers who trained here before serving in one of the Second World War’s most demanding campaigns.

Back in March, Formby Bubble reported that Formby Parish Council was supporting plans for a permanent memorial. Now, work is well underway, with the monument taking shape outside the shops on Harington Road, on the site of the former Harington Barracks.
The memorial commemorates the legendary Chindits – a highly specialised long-range penetration force who fought deep behind enemy lines in Burma (now Myanmar) against the Japanese Army during the Second World War.
Harington Barracks played a vital role in the war effort, with more than 2,000 soldiers from The King’s Regiment (Liverpool) training in Formby before travelling to India and Burma. Many of those who trained here never returned home.
Operating in some of the harshest conditions imaginable, the Chindits endured dense jungle, disease, exhaustion and relentless enemy attacks. Their courage, resilience and sacrifice became legendary, and the new memorial will ensure their story continues to be remembered by future generations.
The project has been developed by Formby Parish Council, working alongside The Chindit Society, Sefton Council and other supporters. It will stand near the former barracks’ parade ground, providing a permanent place for residents and visitors to reflect on Formby’s unique wartime heritage.

The existing Chindits plaque, currently located on Proctor Road, already commemorates the battalions that trained in Formby before leaving for Burma. The new memorial will build on that tribute with a prominent and lasting monument in the heart of the community.
At this stage, an unveiling date has not yet been announced, but we’ll keep you updated as work progresses and more details become available.
It’s wonderful to see this important piece of Formby’s history being brought to life, ensuring the bravery and sacrifice of the Chindits will never be forgotten.
