Two seriously injured after electric bike crash on Church Road in Formby as eyewitness describes moments before collision

Two men have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a collision involving an electric bike on Church Road in Formby this evening.

Emergency services were called to Church Road on Wednesday 30 September following the collision close to the junction with Davenham Road.

A large police cordon was put in place, closing a section of Church Road while emergency services dealt with the incident and officers carried out enquiries at the scene.

Merseyside Police confirmed that one electric bike was involved and that two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that emergency services are on Church Road following a road traffic collision involving one electric bike this afternoon, Wednesday 30 September.”

“Two men have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.”

“A road closure is currently in place on Church Road on the junction of Davenham Road and motorists are advised to avoid the area. Thank you for your patience whilst we deal with this incident.”

The police cordon was lifted at approximately 8.10pm tonight and Church Road reopened, although police vehicles with blue lights remained at the scene afterwards.

Since our original report, Formby Bubble has received further information about the circumstances immediately before the collision.

An eyewitness who says they saw the incident unfold told Formby Bubble that police were pursuing two people travelling on an electric bike shortly before the crash.

According to the eyewitness, the bike was travelling at high speed and one of the two people was sitting on the handlebars.

The witness said that as the riders attempted to turn right, the bike crashed into a wall.

They described witnessing the incident as terrifying and extremely traumatic.

There has been considerable discussion on social media about exactly what happened in the moments before the collision. However, the circumstances surrounding the crash have not yet been officially confirmed by Merseyside Police.

At this stage, police have confirmed only that the collision involved one electric bike and that two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Formby Bubble will not speculate on the cause of the collision while enquiries are continuing.
