Something a little different is coming to Formby this autumn, with Laurel’s Wood launching its first accredited professional training courses within its 16 acre woodland.
The courses are aimed particularly at teachers, teaching assistants, childcare professionals, youth workers and others working with children or outdoor learning who would like to gain practical skills and qualifications for delivering activities in woodland environments.
What is Forest School?
Forest School is an approach to learning that takes children and young people out of the traditional classroom and into a natural environment. Activities can include woodland exploration, using tools safely, building shelters, learning about nature, developing practical skills and encouraging confidence, independence and teamwork.
From October half term 2026, Laurel’s Wood in Formby will offer two different professional training routes.
4 Day Woodland Skills Leader
This is designed for teachers and practitioners who want practical woodland and bushcraft skills but do not necessarily need the more extensive coursework involved in becoming a fully qualified Forest School Leader.
Participants will develop skills they can use when taking groups outdoors and introducing woodland based learning and activities.
8 Day Level 3 Forest School Leader
This is the more comprehensive option for people who want to develop their professional practice and become qualified to lead their own Forest School programme.
The training is practical and hands on, with participants learning in the same type of woodland environment where they will eventually put their skills into practice.
One of the particularly interesting aspects is the setting itself. Rather than learning these skills in a classroom, the courses will take place within Laurel’s Wood’s 16 acre woodland here in Formby.
Places on the first courses are limited.
