Shock Closure of Maryland Care Home in Formby as Residents Moved out and Site Set for Redevelopment

Maryland Care Home on School Lane in Formby is set to close suddenly on April 12, with residents already being moved out and staff reportedly given very little notice.
The long established care home, located at 7 School Lane, has served the local community for many years, making the news a shock to families, residents, and staff alike.
Sources say employees were given just four weeks’ notice of the closure, raising concerns about the short timeframe for both staff and residents to make alternative arrangements. It is understood that most residents have already been relocated to other care settings ahead of the shutdown.

There are also reports that the site is set to be redeveloped, with plans to convert the building into flats or apartments after the closure.
While no official reason for the closure has been confirmed, the home has faced regulatory scrutiny in recent months. The Care Quality Commission served a warning notice on September 4, 2025, after finding failures in the safe management of medicines. A report published in October 2025 rated the home as “Requires Improvement” across all areas, highlighting concerns around safety, governance, and limited activities, although staff were praised for their caring approach.
Maryland Care Home, operated by Savoy Care Home Limited, has previously described its service as providing a warm and welcoming environment, with comfortable facilities, freshly prepared meals, and a range of wellbeing activities.
It is important to note that this home should not be confused with Phoenix House Care Home on Andrews Lane, which closed in 2017, although both have been linked to the same ownership.
At this stage, the exact reasons behind the closure remain unclear, but the sudden nature of the decision and the reported redevelopment plans have left many in the community concerned.
We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
