Scarecrow Shindigs Festival bring colour, creativity and plenty of fun to St Peter’s Church in Formby
St Peter’s Church in Formby has been taken over by a wonderful collection of colourful characters as its Scarecrow Shindigs festival gets underway.
The four day event began yesterday, Thursday 24th September, and continues until Sunday 27th September, with scarecrows displayed in and around the historic church and churchyard on Green Lane.
And these certainly aren’t your average scarecrows!
There are 19 fantastic creations to discover, made by local families, community groups, schools, Scouts, Brownies, artists, charities and organisations from across Formby.
Visitors can follow a special map around St Peter’s to find them all, with some brilliant names and imaginative creations along the way.
Among those taking part are St Peter’s Community, the Association of Formby Artists, St Peter’s Scouts, St Peter’s Brownie Group, 9th Formby Cubs, Peterhouse School, Formby Group Riding for the Disabled, Freshfields Animal Rescue and Woodlands Lodge Nursing Home, alongside local families, individuals and St Peter’s groups.
The scarecrows include Vincent van Crow, created by the Association of Formby Artists, Swifty Owl by St Peter’s Brownies, The Bill & Ben Cubs by 9th Formby Cubs and Three Footballers from Peterhouse School.
There is also Hairy Trotter from Formby Group Riding for the Disabled, Hector from Freshfields Animal Rescue, Harry the Gardener from Woodlands Lodge Nursing Home and plenty more with names including Blind Faith, Bishop Dickie Bird, Rin Tin Tin, Mr Men, Kitty Bin Break, Wheely Wonka and Dennis the Demon Dentist.
Have your say and choose your favourites
It isn’t just about spotting all 19 scarecrows. Visitors are being invited to vote for their favourites too.
Voting papers are available at the event, with everyone able to choose their top three scarecrows in order.
Children are very much encouraged to get involved, with votes separated into school age and grown up categories and children’s votes given extra weighting.
Completed voting papers can be handed to a steward inside the church or placed in the ballot box in the Coffee Shop.
It makes the event a lovely little challenge for families. Grab a map, hunt down all 19 creations and then face the difficult job of deciding which three deserve your vote.
Scarecrows, coffee and cake
The church and Coffee Shop are open today and Saturday from 10.30am until 4.30pm, giving visitors plenty of time to explore the displays before stopping for a drink and some cake.
On Sunday 27th September, the event opens from 11.30am until 4.30pm.

It is a brilliant community event and a chance to see just how much imagination has gone into creating this year’s scarecrows.
Whether you come along to support one of the local groups taking part, bring the children on a scarecrow hunt or simply fancy an afternoon wander followed by coffee and cake, there is plenty to see.
Our favourite is the Hedgehog, we absolutely love him!
