Formby’s much-loved Ravenmeols Community Centre (RMCC) is set to reopen next week with a fresh new look following a major refurbishment.
The centre, which first opened its doors in 1985, has long been a cornerstone of community life in Formby. Run by a small team of just 4–5 dedicated volunteers, the RMCC operates as a registered charity (No. 518241) and is managed entirely on a not-for-profit basis. This ensures that facilities remain affordable and accessible to local people, with income from room hire used solely to pay the running costs.
Recognised by the Parish Council as a Community Asset, the RMCC plays a vital role in bringing people together, particularly those over 50 and elderly residents. It also provides facilities for disabled and deaf visitors, offering a safe, welcoming space that benefits not just attendees, but often their carers too.
Over the years, the RMCC has hosted a wide variety of groups and activities, from U3A art and music classes, Tai Chi, toddler groups, photography clubs and chess, to Slimming groups and even Lego Robotics. These activities not only keep people mentally and physically active but also provide companionship and support to those who may otherwise feel isolated.
The committee regularly consults with group leaders to improve the centre, and past initiatives have included installing a defibrillator, a Hearing Loop system for the partially deaf, and baby-changing facilities for young parents.
This year, thanks to a combination of grants and community effort, the centre has undergone a complete refurbishment. The works have included:
✨ Full redecoration throughout
✨ A brand-new kitchen
✨ Installation of Wi-Fi
✨ New carpets and storage cabinets
The transformation means the RMCC is now better equipped than ever to serve the community and continue its proud tradition of being a hub for social connection, wellbeing, and lifelong learning.

Treasurer Ed Patten said: “Past and present committee members have worked really hard to make sure the RMCC is a centre we can all be proud of. We hope even more local people will come along, join existing groups, or even start new ones.”
The centre is actively encouraging new groups to hire the space and welcomes more residents to get involved with the wide range of activities on offer.
