Hundreds of people gathered today in Formby Village and at Formby Pool Gardens to witness the annual Passion Play, organised by Churches Together in Formby, Altcar and Hightown.

The much-loved Good Friday event began with a Walk of Witness through the village before crowds assembled for the powerful re-enactment telling the story of the final days of Jesus.

This year’s performance featured a large local cast and brought together churches and members of the community, creating a truly moving and reflective atmosphere. Key scenes included the trial before Pilate, the crowd calling for Barabbas, the crucifixion, and the powerful resurrection finale.

The audience were invited to take part throughout, joining in with crowd responses and well-known hymns including In Christ Alone and Lord I Lift Your Name on High, adding to the sense of unity and community spirit.
The Passion Play was written and directed by Dympna Edwards, with sound by Mark Edwards, and featured performances from local residents including Ken Bulger as Jesus, alongside a dedicated supporting cast who brought the story vividly to life.
A prayer tent was also available for anyone wishing to reflect or speak with someone, and many stayed afterwards to gather at the Pool Café following the performance.
The event once again proved to be a highlight of the Easter calendar in Formby, with many praising the dedication and effort of everyone involved.
A huge well done to all those who took part in organising and performing, and to the hundreds who turned out to support such a meaningful community event.
