A grieving family is urging people across Crosby, Thornton, Litherland, Formby and surrounding areas to be vigilant after decorative stones were stolen from a baby’s grave at Thornton Crematorium — for the second time this year.
The incident was described in a social media post that has since gathered huge emotional response from local people, many expressing sadness, anger, and disbelief.
In the post, the family explained that the stones were placed on the grave of a baby boy. When the boy’s mother visited the cemetery and discovered the stones were gone, she was left inconsolable. A member of the public who saw her distress stopped to offer comfort — something the family says they are hugely grateful for.
The post reads:
“For the second time this year the decorative stones have been stolen from my brother’s grave. It’s disgusting enough that someone could do this, but he was a baby when he passed. They stole from a baby.”
The family explained that they spoke to staff at the crematorium about the thefts and were deeply upset by the response they received, claiming they were told to ‘buy cheaper stones’ — a comment that left them feeling dismissed at a moment of profound grief.
The social media post continued:
“There are some things you just don’t do. You don’t target the vulnerable, you don’t steal from churches, and you don’t steal from cemeteries. I hope whoever thought it was a good idea to steal from a baby’s grave never has to feel the upset and rage this has caused my family.”
Thornton Crematorium is visited by people across the area, many with loved ones resting in the grounds. The family now wants others to be aware of what has happened and to keep a close eye on any decorations they place on graves.
Formby Bubble sends love and sympathy to the family affected, and to anyone who has faced similar distress. No family should ever have to endure this.
