There were dramatic scenes in Formby this afternoon after a horse and cart bolted down Bushby’s Lane without a rider, sending locals into shock and bringing trains to a standstill.
At around 1:15pm today (Saturday 13th September), the pony and cart was seen galloping at full speed directly towards oncoming cars. One witness said: “It was too fast to stop – it came straight at my car!”
The runaway horse, which had come from the Lifeboat Road beach area, caused chaos as it smashed through the barrier at Raven Meols level crossing. Police rushed to the scene, trains were halted, and the electric rail had to be isolated. Network Rail engineers arrived shortly after to begin major repairs to the damaged gate.

At 1:30pm, Merseyrail posted a notice on their social media who said: “Due to a delay incurred on this trains journey, services on the Southport line face cancellations or alterations.”
Thankfully, in what could have been a far more serious incident, the pony was eventually caught and returned safely to its young owner. By mid-afternoon, the horse was back at its stables safe and well – a huge relief to all who witnessed the frightening scene.
Although the barrier at Eccles crossing on Ravenmeols Lane is still under repair, the danger has passed and the community is simply grateful that no one – especially the horse – was hurt.
What a drama for a Saturday afternoon in Formby – and what a lucky escape for the pony!
