Disposable BBQ Warning as Fire Risk Grows Across Formby

Concerns have been raised following reports of disposable BBQs being used in parks and public spaces across Formby.
With recent warm and dry weather conditions, grass, undergrowth and woodland areas can ignite very easily. Even a small spark from a disposable BBQ can quickly spread, putting people, wildlife and property at risk.

One of the biggest concerns is how disposable BBQs are disposed of after use. Many remain dangerously hot for hours and can easily start fires if placed on grass, in bins or left in woodland areas.

There have already been several fires reported in and around Formby’s woods this year, prompting renewed calls for people to act responsibly when visiting local beauty spots.
Many residents may not realise that disposable BBQs and open fires are banned in many public spaces across Sefton under Public Space Protection Orders. This includes Formby Beach and numerous parks throughout the borough. Anyone found breaching these rules could face enforcement action and fines.
Some local residents have also expressed concern that disposable BBQs continue to be sold in local shops despite the well publicised fire risks and the number of incidents already reported.

As the summer approaches, visitors and residents are being urged to leave BBQs at home and help protect Formby’s woodlands, parks and coastline from preventable fires.
Please think before lighting a BBQ or fire in a public space. One careless decision could have devastating consequences. 🔥🌲☀️
