A concerned resident has raised the alarm after a small but potentially dangerous sinkhole appeared on West Lane in Formby, close to the entrance of the new housing development.

The hole, which was discovered today, is said to be quite deep despite its relatively small size and could pose a risk to motorists if not spotted in time. Residents are particularly concerned as there are currently no warning signs, barriers or traffic cones in place to alert drivers to the hazard.

According to the resident, a workman at the scene advised that the issue falls under the responsibility of Sefton Council and therefore could not be marked with a cone by site workers.
The resident said:
“This has opened up today on West Lane next to the entrance to the new housing estate. A workman told me he can’t put a cone there as it’s Sefton’s problem. Not surprised with the weight of the wagons going down there. Be aware before you lose a wheel down it.”

Some residents have questioned whether ongoing construction activity, including heavy goods vehicles accessing the site and excessive piling works taking place, may have contributed to the ground movement. However, there is currently no evidence to confirm the cause, and any link to the nearby development remains speculative.
The defect has reportedly been reported to the police, and residents are urging the relevant authorities to inspect the area and make it safe as soon as possible.
Motorists are advised to take extra care when travelling along West Lane until the issue is addressed.
