Calls for Tougher Controls on Nitrous Oxide After Concerns Raised in Formby

Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson is calling for further action to tackle the misuse and sale of nitrous oxide after concerns were raised with him by Merseyside Police in #Formby.

Mr Esterson says the issue is becoming an increasing concern because of the potential dangers to young people, the challenges it presents for police and the growing problem of discarded nitrous oxide canisters being left in local communities.

Merseyside Police raised concerns about nitrous oxide directly with the MP in Formby, while residents from across Sefton Central have also contacted him about the issue.

Maghull Town Council has similarly asked for help after reporting a growing number of discarded canisters being collected in the area.

Mr Esterson is now taking the matter up with Government Ministers to establish whether more can be done to regulate the sale of nitrous oxide canisters and help reduce their misuse.

He said:

“Nitrous oxide use is a danger to our young people, a challenge for law enforcement, and a littering blight on our communities.

“It’s an issue Merseyside Police raised with me in Formby. Maghull Town Council has also asked for help in tackling the growing number of discarded canisters they collect. Residents across Sefton Central have told me of their concerns.

“I’m taking this up with Government Ministers to see what more can be done to regulate the sale of nitrous oxide canisters, to try to reduce their misuse.”

Mr Esterson is also asking Formby residents who have experienced problems with nitrous oxide use or discarded canisters in their area to get in touch with him directly.
