Local environmental volunteers and community leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Formby’s much-loved coastline and woodland following a recent meeting in the village.
Bill Esterson met with Nigel and Peter from Rage Against Rubbish at Gee’s Coffee Bar in Formby to discuss the ongoing challenges facing Formby Beach and the surrounding Pinewoods, particularly during peak visitor periods.
Rage Against Rubbish are well known locally for their dedication to keeping Formby clean and are also active members of the Formby Beach Angels, a volunteer group that regularly gives up time to help protect the natural environment and keep the beach looking its best.
During the meeting, Nigel and Peter highlighted the increasing pressures placed on the area on the busiest days, including littering, inconsiderate parking, and incidents of anti-social and at times criminal behaviour. They spoke about the impact these issues have on the environment, local residents, and the volunteers who work tirelessly to manage the consequences.
Both volunteers expressed a strong desire to work collaboratively with key organisations, including the National Trust, Sefton Council, local police, and borough and parish councillors. Their shared aim is to support residents, encourage responsible behaviour, and reduce disruption while ensuring Formby remains a welcoming destination.
Speaking after the meeting, Bill Esterson MP said he greatly appreciated Rage Against Rubbish taking the time to meet with him and confirmed that the concerns raised will be discussed further with partner organisations.
He added that local councillors, community groups and agencies continue to work hard to strike a balance between welcoming visitors to one of Sefton’s most treasured locations and protecting both the local community and the environment.
The meeting underlined the strength of Formby’s community spirit and the vital role volunteers play in safeguarding the area for future generations.
