Formby is set to step firmly into spring this weekend as the clocks go forward, marking the start of longer, lighter evenings and the welcome return of British Summer Time.
At 1am on Sunday 29th March, clocks will move forward by one hour to 2am. While that means losing an hour in bed, it also signals the beginning of brighter evenings and the gradual arrival of summer.
Across Formby, the change is already being felt. The days are stretching out, the evenings are staying lighter for longer, and early signs of spring are appearing across the area. For many, this weekend marks a turning point after the darker winter months.
The move to British Summer Time happens every year on the last Sunday in March and remains in place until the clocks go back again in October. This year, they will return to Greenwich Mean Time on Sunday 25th October.
The tradition dates back more than a century and was first introduced during wartime as a way to make better use of daylight hours. Today, while some question whether it is still necessary, many still welcome the boost that lighter evenings bring.
For residents in Formby, the benefits are clear. Longer evenings mean more time outdoors, whether that is enjoying walks through the dunes, visiting the beach, or simply making the most of the extra daylight after work.
While the lost hour of sleep may take some adjusting to, the reward is weeks of extended daylight as the community moves closer towards the summer months.
Residents are being reminded to check their clocks before going to bed on Saturday night to avoid being caught out on Sunday morning.
With lighter evenings now on the horizon, Formby can look ahead to the warmer, brighter days that many have been waiting for.
Spring Forward, Fall Back.....
29th March 2026 - Forward 1 hour. Daylight Saving Time Starts.
