Behind the Smile - A Thank You to Formby’s Kind Hearts

Dear Formby Bubble:
I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the kind people of Formby. Despite the “mask” I often wear to manage my health conditions and personal grief, there are those who quietly notice and are simply there — and that means more than I can put into words.
I live with vestibular issues following sepsis, alongside ongoing emotional challenges, and at times I do find myself unsteady. It can look unusual, and although things are now better controlled with medication, there are still moments where I have to stop, steady myself, and quietly say “focus” just to get through it. People often say “you look well”, and I truly appreciate that kindness.
I also know I am not alone. There are others in our community carrying deep grief with incredible dignity, rarely speaking of it, but showing great strength every day.
Today was a reminder of just how thoughtful people can be. Two lovely ladies having coffee in Chapel Alley kindly offered to help me with my bags, which meant a lot. I’ve often said, half jokingly, “if I fall, just leave me — I’ll be alright in a minute. No more ambulances!” — but it’s reassuring to know people are looking out for one another.
I also met a wonderful Nigerian lady today and had a lovely chat. Sadly, we both witnessed how quickly kindness can be met with hostility. She was politely asked for money and, when she declined, received abuse. I had a similar experience after trying to help someone I thought was unwell. It’s disappointing, but it makes the kindness we do see stand out even more.
To those in Formby who respect independence but quietly support those who may be vulnerable, thank you. You are a credit to this community.
And a small reminder, as a wise friend once said — if people don’t like you, just walk away. Stay silent and carry on.
Thank you again.
Kind regards,
A grateful resident
