There are some people in our community who quietly give their time, their love and their energy year after year, never asking for recognition. Barbara Smith is one of those very special people.

This week, Barbara was featured on BBC North West Tonight in recognition of her extraordinary service to Formby. At almost 80 years old, she is still running the Parents and Toddler Group at Holy Trinity Church alongside her dear friend Joyce O’Connell.

For so many families, this group has been far more than just a weekly meet up. It has been a lifeline. A place of warmth, friendship and reassurance during those early years of parenthood which can often feel overwhelming and lonely. One local mum shared how the group meant everything to her when she moved to Formby sixteen years ago as a single parent with a one and two year old. Like so many others, she found support, kindness and a sense of belonging through Barbara’s dedication.

What makes Barbara’s commitment even more remarkable is that only a few weeks ago she broke her arm in two places. Despite this, she continues to show up each week with the same care and devotion for the children and parents of our village. That quiet strength and unwavering love for her community is something truly special.
Barbara represents the very best of Formby. Generous. Compassionate. Selfless. An inspiration to generations of mums, dads and little ones who have walked through those church doors.
If you did not see the feature, it is available to watch on BBC North West Tonight on iPlayer. It was the final piece of the programme and a beautiful tribute to a woman who has given so much.
Barbara, our Bubble is so incredibly proud of you. You are deeply appreciated and very much loved.
