Formby Junior Sports Club - Frank Rourke's report

Formby Junior Sports Club began its seventh decade of providing football for children of all abilities and got off to a successful, encouraging and very enjoyable start to the New Year with all teams being in action over the first two weekends.

WEEK ONE FJSC Under 18 Girls played Langho in the West Lancs Girls’ League Cup. With a fast tempo passing game and calm defending FJSC went through to the next round with a 3 nil victory. Sophie Dixon scored early on and then again late in the game to take it out of reach of the visitors. Jayde Hanlon deservedly scored in between to round off an energetic performance. Megan Houston didn’t put a foot wrong at the back all game, showing great skill and determination and Lucy Charalambou was outstanding off the bench. Sam Cawley had a spirited game in midfield and hit the woodwork twice and was unlucky not to score.

FJSC Under 16 Jets without a match for many weeks due to the weather played really well and were unlucky to lose 2-1 with Churchtown scoring the winner with ten minutes to go. Katie Leech had earlier scored for the Jets. Maybe there was a little weariness setting in as the second half wore on but the FJSC players came off buoyed by a good performance and their usual enthusiasm. FJSC Under 10 Saturday team had a very close game with their Hightown League opponents. Josh Adderley opened the scoring and then Charlie Garvey added two goals from a penalty and a very well taken free kick from twenty yards. Man of the match was Max Hall. FJSC Under 8 Girls Bobcats played Churchtown and once again played well. Shanice Jones, Gabriella Otty and Girl of the Game Bella Massey all scored. Emily Lavin and Emilia Guy also played well.

FJSC Under 6’s once again fielded three teams and all the boys played with endeavour, desire and were full of energy. The first match was against Maghull Whites. In a very high scoring match, which saw many goals at both ends of the pitch on target for FJSC were Joshua Halpin, Thomas Crutchley, Jude Massey, Max McAuley and Josh Tallon. There was superb midfield work from Jude Massey and Josh Tallon, neither of whom stopped running, was a huge bonus. The goal of the match was one scored by Thomas Crutchley when every FJSC player touched the ball at least once, before Thomas chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. The second Under 6 game was against Maghull Blue. Scoring for FJSC in this encounter were Rory Rankine, Noah Walker- Hall, Ryan Lamb, Joseph Kenyon and Ted McAuley. This was a good all round team performance. The last match of the morning saw FJSC Under 6’s play DK mini. Campbell Woodcock, Jaiden Crosby and Harley Evans scored and there were also good performances from Parker Kehoe and Oscar Howard.

WEEK TWO FJSC Under 18 Boys played Redgate Rovers Green. FJSC won the toss and decided to take advantage of the wind in the first half. FJSC were 1 nil up within six minutes with a delightfully taken header by Michael Hughes from a cross from the left. Four minutes later, Lewis Constable added a second. Another great header came in the thirty-eighth minute from Sean Lawler-Pilkington from a corner and a fourth goal just before half time from Lewis Constable with his second of the match. FJSC found it difficult to get on the score sheet in the second half playing into the wind although had numerous chances they couldn’t convert until Cameron Sergison headed in with two minutes to go. Man of the match was Sean Lawler-Pilkington.

FJSC Under 18 Girls were back in league action after their cup success the previous week. Formby had the better of the first half against Ashton Town, and were 4-0 up at half time, through goals by Sophie Dixon, Ellie Brewer and two from Anna Rutherford. Sam Cawley played well in midfield. Charlotte Armstrong and Megan Houston kept the Ashton strikers quiet and passed well from the back. Rachelle Douras-Hanlon combined well with Nina Macy and got forward from left back to contribute to the attack. The second half was goalless. The nearest effort was from Anna Rutherford with a shot that was tipped onto the bar to deny her a hat trick. Jayde Hanlon whipped crosses in from the right and ran at her marker with menace. It was a very good team performance.

FJSC Under 15 Boys made it a good start to 2020. The team were a bit rusty after the Christmas holidays but overall it was a pleasing enough display against opponents Rufford and Holmeswood. Sam Trainor opened the scoring in the first half with a fantastic strike from outside the box. Rufford and Holmeswood have massively improved since last season and proved very difficult to break down. Lucas Gornall added to the scoring with a wonderful volley inside the area beating the Rufford keeper. Rufford managed to pull a goal back but not enough to take the points. James Everett, deputising in goal was man of the match. The midfield pairing of Andy Kimmance and Sam Trainor also played very well.

FJSC Under 14 Whites had a full squad available against Redgate. There was some good possession play in the first half with FJSC taking an early lead early with a goal by Henry Peck. There were plenty of shots from the Whites but were denied throughout the game with a good performance from the Redgate goalkeeper. Steven Mordaunt scored a second goal but Redgate came back for a 2-2 draw. Luke Honour also played well. FJSC Under 10’s Saturday team had a very evenly match with Warbreck. Luca Masssey scored and was man of the match. On Sunday FJSC Under 10 Blacks played Freshfield. In a close match the FJSC scorers were Dominic Maxwell and man of the match Archie Ogden.

FJSC Under 9 Blacks played away at Burscough Dynamo. The first half was a closely fought contest between the sides with some good football from Formby. Burscough scored twice but this was quickly answered by two great goals from Oliver Dean one of which came from a pitch length run following some good defensive work. Burscough managed to score another just before half time. Burscough scored quickly in the second half. FJSC seemed to gain momentum as the game went on with some surging runs from Charlie Knowles and a few good attempts from Thomas Donnelly. FJSC finished strongly with well-worked piece of play finished off by Lewis Donoghue. FJSC continued to press but ran out of time in the end. Overall it was a good first performance back following the Christmas break by FJSC Blacks.

FJSC Under 7’s played against new team Hesketh Colts. It was a good all round performance and especially from man of the match Jacob Stevenson-Patterson. Scoring for FJSC were Matthew Crutchley, Hughie Macleod, Jacob Stevenson- Patterson, Ephraim Sutton and George Hayes. FJSC Under 6’s again had three matches on Sunday. The first fixture was against Netherton Athletic. It was a very exciting match with the FJSC goals being scored by Mason Stringer, Jude Massey, Joshua Halpin, Thomas Crutchley, Max McAuley and Rory Rankine. ESC were FJSC Under 6’s in the second game. The goal scorers were Diego Funes-Cervera, Harley Evans, Ted McAuley, Josh Tallon, Jaiden Crosby and Joshua Halpin. The third match was against Maghull. Ryan Lamb, Noah Walker-Hall and Parker Kehoe scored for the Under 6’s. Oscar Howard and Finn McDerby both played well in a very encouraging team effort.
