Formby Junior Sports Club - Franks report - 30/09/19

The torrential and unrelenting rain caused the cancellation of many Formby Junior Sports Club matches last weekend. This included all Inter Club coaching and games on Saturday morning. Eight matches did go ahead and all proved to be very exciting. FJSC Under 18 Girls’ played Ashton Ladies at Deansgate Lane and got off to a great start when Sam Cawley reacted first to open the scoring after a free kick bounced down off the Ashton crossbar. Anna Rutherford rounded the keeper with style after being put through by a clever ball from Ellie Brewer to double the lead. Ashton fought back to 2-2. Anna Rutherford gave FJSC the lead again scoring her second goal of the match from a long range free kick but was denied a hat-trick when judged to be offside after netting a tremendous deep cross from Jayde Hanlon. A penalty let Ashton equalise although Rachel Robinson in goal was close to keeping it out. With the scores now level at 3-3 FJSC’s Nina Macy came close to scoring a late winner after beating several defenders. It was a very good team performance but special mention goes to Charlotte Armstrong who played particularly well at the back and tackled with skill and commitment. The Under 18 Girls have made a great start to the season are unbeaten in the first four league games played and are currently in second position. Next Sunday the team travels away to play league leaders Blackpool FC. FJSC Under 17 Boys played away in Burscough against Seahorses Under 18’s in the cup. In horrendous conditions of strong wind and lashing rain, FJSC had the better of the first half despite kicking into the wind. FJSC had several free kick attempts on goal but it was difficult to get any power into them to test the Seahorses keeper. The half time score was 0-0. Unfortunately for FJSC, the wind died down a little in the second half and Burscough Seahorses took advantage of some FJSC’s errors to go 3 nil ahead. Jack Cunliffe pulled one back to give some hope for FJSC but Burscough scored a further two goals to make it 1-5. Lewis Constable finished well to make it 2-5 at full time. FJSC Under 15 Blacks were also in cup action and played at home against Phoenix Arrows. Like all the matches played the conditions were terrible but it proved to be a character building display from all the boys. The Under 15’s went on to win 4-1 with Lucas Gornall scoring twice and there was also one goal each from Callum Davidson and Conor Leyland. Goalkeeper Ross Ferguson was voted man of match for making some important saves including one from a penalty when FJSC were 3-1 ahead. Jamie Duggan and Callum Davidson played well in their central defence positions. FJSC Under 14 Whites played Rainford Rangers Real in a terrific and nail-biting cup-tie. The Whites took the lead early on when Luke Honour scored. There was end-to-end football with some excellent play and chances for both teams but the first half finished 1-2 to Rainford. The second half continued with exciting football, with some excellent saves being required from goalkeeper Jack Rummens. A fantastic free kick saw Marc Whitelaw’s shot hit the top corner of the Rainford net with minutes to spare the take the game to extra time. The relentless weather and tough playing conditions made it very difficult for both teams. FJSC came close to scoring and were unlucky as Rainford managed to score to very narrowly win 3-2 in a memorable cup match. FJSC Under 14 Blacks and Redgate Rovers were also involved in another epic cup-tie. The scores were level at 2-2 at full time but the Blacks conceded two goals in extra time and lost 4-2. It was another brave effort. FJSC Under 7’s produced another excellent team performance, this time away at Churchtown Jaguars. Hughie Macleod scored a triple hat trick and man of the match Zac Hooson-Jones also scored. The Under 7’s had only five players and no substitutes on this occasion. There were excellent displays from Jacob Stevenson-Patterson, Harry McKenna and Matthew Crutchley. The team have made a great start to the season winning three out of the first four games played so far and are improving with every outing. FJSC were able to field two Under 6 teams on Sunday with fifteen boys taking part. Despite the appalling weather, the boys ensured they made a good account of themselves, playing against no less than five players in local academy’s, across the two games. In the first match the opposition were St. George’s. There were some notable performances from Josh Tallon who started showing his talent in only his second game for the club. Thomas Crutchley also put in a battling performance alongside the hardworking Clayton Gilbertson. The second game was against Southport Trinity. Ted McAuley was a joy to watch in goal, making a series of fantastic saves. Joshua Halpin and Oliver Hall-Gleeson showed maturity in their defensive work and striker Mason Stringer was once again on top shooting form. Scoring the goals in the two matches played were - Thomas Crutchley (3), Clayton Gilbertson (1), Mason Stringer (5), Joshua Halpin (2) and Max McAuley (1). Congratulations to all the FJSC members who braved the weather conditions at the weekend in the eight matches played and who were all praised so highly by their respective team managers.
