Formby Junior Sports Club - Franks report - 01/09/19
Formby Junior Sports Club’s 61st season started well last Saturday. Forty new members joined the Inter Club section on a successful morning. The Representative teams were also busy at the weekend with many matches played home and away. There were victories for FJSC’s two oldest Representative teams. In the Craven Minor League FJSC’s Under 17 boys’ team are competing in an Under 18 Division. On Saturday their opponents were Formby Athletic. It was a competitive match between two evenly matched teams. Both teams’ goalkeepers made outstanding saves. FJSC took the lead with a well-taken goal from Lewis Constable. A penalty was awarded to FJSC shortly after when George Treble was brought down in the box. The resulting spot kick was saved but the rebound was eventually put in by Michael Hughes to make it 2 nil at half time. FJSC should have gone further ahead in the second half but missed a penalty. Formby Athletic put FjSC under pressure but couldn’t claw a goal back. In the West Lancs League FJSC Under 18 Girls played away at new team to the league, Tiki Taka Atherton LR. In an exciting match FJSC gained the three points with a 4-3 victory. Anna Rutherford netted twice, Sophie Dixon scored one from open play and Ellie Brewer calmly scored from a penalty. FJSC Under 16 Girls Jets played a pre season friendly away at Churchtown. Naturally a little rusty, it was a good chance to get some match time before the season starts and the scoreline was a little harsh on the Jets with a good, competitive match played out at Meols Park. Lily Hall went close on a couple of occasions, in particular rounding the keeper and narrowly failing to squeeze in a shot from a tight angle. It was a good game and a special mention too to keeper Dot Russell-Gajos. FJSC Under 15 Boys won 4-1 with goals from Sam Trainor, James Everett, Jack Taylor and Luke Phillips. Ross Ferguson pulled off the save of the match just before half time when the score was only 1nil. The boys have made an encouraging start to the season. FJSC Under 14 Blacks played a very good Rainford Rangers Real team. Jacob Lewis scored for the Blacks. All sixteen boys gained invaluable experience in a tough match. FJSC Under 14 Whites had no fixture this week. FJSC Under 12 Blacks had a very tight and entertaining game. Their opponents, Redgate took an early lead very much against the run of play. Both teams had plenty of chances in an exciting encounter. The half time score was 1-0 to Redgate. Formby continued to play well and create chances and finally with 10 minutes to go, a fine move saw Ollie Shaw break free down the right, crossing to Oscar Fletcher who swept the ball home. An exciting finale saw Redgate scramble home a last minute winner. It was a good start and a good performance from everybody and a draw would probably have been a fair result. Nevertheless, the performance bodes well for the season ahead. FJSC Under 10’s Blacks also had a very exciting match against Southport and Birkdale. The Blacks conceded a goal in the first minute of each half, which proved costly. Man of the match Dominic Maxwell scored twice and Archie Ogden was also on target. FJSC Under 9 Whites hit top form in their match with Hesketh Colts. Harry Nelson and man of the match Owen Griffiths scores 5 goals each. Charlie Jameson completed the scoring with another goal. FJSC Under 9 Blacks had a tough opening match. FJSC’s newly formed team will have learnt a lot from the experience. Pheonix got off to a flying start but Formby then settled into the game and went toe to toe with their opponents for the majority of the first half, with Lewis Donoghue showing some excellent touches going forward, Ollie Dean making some driving runs from midfield, and Charlie Knowles covering at the back. As half time approached, Robert Gorman pulled off a couple of fine saves but could do nothing to prevent two further long range strikes from going in. In the second half there was a change of goalkeeper as Sam Uttley moved from defence into goal, and Toby Hargreaves, Brennan Howell, and Harley Wright were introduced and all played their part. Tom Donnelly went close to scoring having been put through by James Potts. Phoenix took control of the game in the latter stages. Formby did not let their heads drop despite the score line and continued to fight to the end. SEE TEAM PHOTOGRAPH. FJSC Under 7’s played their first competitive match in the Craven Minor League against Redgate Blacks. After a very difficult first half the Under 7’s played very much better after the break. It was a very high scoring match. FJSC’s man of the match Hughie Macleod scored seven times. Finally, FJSC ‘s youngest team, the Under 6’s were involved in an entertaining match against Southport Trinity. The game was close throughout. Mason Stringer scored eight, Jaiden Crosby two and a there was one goal each from Rory Rankine and Jude Massey. Joshua Halpin and Clayton Gilbertson both played very well.
