MP backs climate change protestors' anti-fracking message

MP Bill Esterson backed some of the aims of the Extinction Rebellion protest when he reiterated Labour's opposition to fracking. The Sefton Central MP said his party's commitment to tackling climate change meant Labour would ban fracking if they win the next General Election.

The Shadow Business Minister said he supported the actions of the Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney who this week wrote an open letter outlining the financial risks of climate change.

The MP wrote on his Facebook page: "Labour’s commitment to tackle climate change means a resounding “No” to fracking in Formby and is in stark contrast to the Conservatives and those who support the Conservatives including the so-called Independents on Sefton Council.

"Labour is committed to tackling climate change. It is vital to save the planet and for the economy that we invest in renewable energy and a low carbon future. "Labour voted against fracking under our national parks in 2015 and contrary to what the Independents are saying, we have never given permission for fracking. Sefton Council is Labour controlled and has twice voted to ban fracking.

"The Independents are making up stories to hide their record of voting with the Conservatives. The Independents give the green light for fracking and cuts to services every time they vote with the Conservatives. "The intervention by the Governor of the Bank of England is a big step in meeting the challenge of climate change and is very welcome.

"Labour in government will ban fracking and invest in saving our planet. As the “Extinction Rebellion” protestors are saying, it is vital that we do so if life on earth is to survive.”
