Formby Junior Sports Club - Frank's report 14th January 2019

Well at last it is official – Formby Junior Sports Club is now 60 years old.

On January 7th1959, my dad Jim Rourke founded FJSC. I don’t think in his wildest dreams he would have envisaged that Formby Junior Sports Club would still be in existence and going strong sixty years later. This landmark has been reached due to the time and dedication that hundreds of volunteers have given to the club during that time. Whether big contributions or small the collective help of all these people has made it possible for our wonderful club to carry on for so long.

Thousands upon thousands of children have played football at FJSC during that time. If you speak to any of these former club members, whether they are now in their sixties, fifties, forties, thirties, twenties or late teens they all say that they still have very fond memories of their time at Formby Junior Sports Club.

The present group of voluntary helpers, managers and coaches are doing their utmost to see that FJSC continues for many years to come. The same ethos that everyone who wishes to play football can do so at FJSC has been maintained and that the club’s Inter Club football section at Deansgate Lane is organised in the same way as it was at Duke Street Park in January 1959.

Now to the present – where best to start but the Inter Club Section. Last Saturday was the first session since early December. Sometimes there can be a slow start after a long break but this was certainly not the case with over two hundred children in attendance.

New boots and new kits of various colours were having their first outing since Christmas. This was particularly noticeable in the Reception and Year One section. Numbers were very encouraging for the future. At one stage more footballs had to be found as every ball set out for coaching was in use.

LAST WEEKEND’S REPRESENTATIVE TEAM MATCHES

All the teams had to adapt to very difficult weather conditions at the weekend with very strong winds and heavy showers.

BOYS’ TEAMS

In the Premier Division second placed FJSC Under 16’s played top of the league Aintree Villa. It was an excellent display by FJSC but it was not the team’s day. FJSC hit the Aintree woodwork four times and there were a number of other near misses as well. Eventually against the run of play Aintree scored the only goal of the match to extend their lead at the top of the table.

FJSC Under 15 Whites lost 3-2 to Northfield in a close encounter. Dan Griffin and Billy Steele scored to tie the game at 2-2. Northfield snatched the winner in the final minute. Man of the match was Billy Steele.

FJSC Under 14 won 2 nil against Phoenix Arrows with goals from Callum Davidson (penalty) and Rylie Reed. Man of the match was goalkeeper Jack Allars.

FJSC Under 10 Blacks played Hillside in atrocious conditions. It was a very good effort by the boys. Harry Lofthouse was man of the match.

FJSC Under 9’s produced a strong team performance against Crosby Stuart. Scoring the goals were Archie Ogden, Dominic Maxwell, James Cook and Charlie Garvey. Man of the match was Max Ryan.

FJSC Under 8’s were on top form away at Southport Trinity Whites. The scorers for FJSC were Owen Griffiths, Thomas Szabo and George Hansen. Man of the match was Niall Brennan.

Congratulations to the boys of the FJSC Under 7’s team. The team gained their first league win of the season after producing a terrific performance against Phoenix. Man of the match was Dillon Crosby who scored the goals together with Beau Weston.

GIRLS’ TEAMS

FJSC Under 18’s won 4-3 against Langho with two goals from Anna Rutherford and there was one goal each for Ellie Brewer and Nina Macy. Charlotte Doyle and Lucy Charalambou played well.

FJSC Under 16’s lost 8 nil to Tranmere Rovers Ladies. The girls played particularly well in the second half against a very talented team. Girl of the game was Annabel Gowling.

FJSC Under 14 United lost 2-1 to Crosby Stuart with Freya Thornton scoring.

There was a shock result in the final round of matches in the Under12/13 Winter League. FJSC Under 13 Albion needed to win their match against FJSC Under 12 Hotspurs to become League Champions again. The younger Hotspurs team defended well against a strong wind in the first half restricting Albion to long shots which Hotspurs goalkeeper Aimee Walsh dealt with comfortably. However Albion did score just before half time. In the second half the lively Hotspurs went on to the attack and with a few minutes remaining Ellie Todino broke free to score a well-deserved equaliser for Hotspurs. Albion needing a goal to win the match and the league leaders attacked incessantly in the closing minutes but could not breach a brilliant Hotspurs defence of Bo Price, Chloe Price, Lauren Boardman and Lottie Atherton. The final score was 1-1. It was Hotspurs best performance of the season. For Albion the outcome was disappointing but to finish runners-up is still very commendable. Hotspurs finished in seventh position, which was very good for an Under 12 team playing most matches against teams one year older than themselves.

In the same division FJSC Under 13 Real defeated Shevington 4-1 with two goals from Evie Law and one each from Sienna Fallows and Jess Lynch. The girl of the game award was shared jointly by Evie Lovelady- Lang and Ava Lewis. Real completed their league programme in a very creditable fifth place and could be strong contenders in the cup competition.

To complete the quartet of teams in the Under 12/13 Division FJSC Under 12 Valencia played Newton. Newton scored the only goal of the match in the first half. Valencia produced a very good second half effort but could not find the goal their efforts deserved as Newton hung on. Girl of the game for a tireless display was Erin Frost.

FJSC Under 11 Atletico’s Faye Johnson gave her team the lead against Remyca. An unlucky deflection denied Darcey Martin a second goal. Remyca fought back strongly.

FJSC Under 10 Tornados produced a first class display against Marina Sands. Sophia Barnes, Holly Foster and the girl of the game Isabelle Parkinson were all on the score sheet with well-taken goals.

FJSC Under 8 Galaxy played Rainford Barca. Faith McClelland and girl of the game Lily Stevens showed great determination and made many timely tackles.

FJSC Under 7 Bobcats and their opponents Ravenhead were very evenly matched in an exciting game.
