Book about the history of Formby during WW1 out now
December 3, 2018

Formby Civic Society has spent the past few years researching what life was like in Formby during the ‘Great War’ – World War One. There is not much evidence still available today, a century after the end of the war, but they made great use of whatever photographs and drawings still remained, what had been in reported in the ‘Formby Times’ during the years of the Home Front – and listened to tales from families who still had memories of Formby people who had joined the armed forces and had served on the Front.
The book has many illustrations to create an image of the time. It is a book that will stand as a recreation of how Formby folk faced a time of great challenge and did all they could for family, friends, community and country.A Community in Wartime: Formby 1914-18’ by Tony Pawson and John Phillips has been in research and preparation for 4 years and has been deliberately written as something for the local community rather than an exercise in formal history.
Their findings can now be found in a book called “A Community in Wartime: Formby 1914-1918”, available at only £5 a copy from Derbyshire’s and the Village Newsagent. It has been produced in a colourful format and takes us back to our community over a hundred years ago when the population was less than 6000 but the village would have been quite recognisable if very different.
