Formby pupils teach MP a lesson in online safety

FORMBY schoolchildren met with their local MP to talk about how they keep themselves safe online.

For Safer Internet Day on February 6, the Trinity St Peter’s Year 6 pupils told Bill Esterson, MP for Sefton Central, about their roles as digital ambassadors for the school.

The pupils said they learn how to keep themselves safe online and develop strategies for spreading the message across the school.

Year 6 pupil Jack said: “We help everyone with technology and how to keep yourself safe. On Safer Internet Day we do a presentation to the whole school.”

Isla, also Year 6, added: “We really want our friends and other children to think about what information they give out online. You should never reveal your personal details because you don’t always know for sure who you are talking to.”

Classmate Lucas added: “We have also designed some posters to spread the message. The designs incorporate our school values of serve, hope, imagine, nurture and enjoy.”

Mr Esterson said: “Safer Internet Day is so important in raising awareness of how all of us can have a more positive experience online. It’s about keeping yourself safe but also about how to be a good friend online and where to go to for help if your experience online is not a good one.

“I know schools across the constituency are really clued up on this issue and are making sure they give our children all the information they need to keep themselves safe.”
