‘Seek help to stay safe and warm this winter’, says Sefton Central MP

Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson is urging residents to stay warm - and safe - this winter, and to find out how to cut household energy bills.

The MP is backing a campaign to encourage customers to contact their energy supplier to check what help is available for making homes more energy efficient and for reducing bills.

Mr Esterson also emphasised the importance of being aware of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide, the “silent killer”.

Mr Esterson said: “Having your boiler serviced annually is crucial to ensuring it is in a fit state for the winter, in order to keep you warm, and to make sure it is free from any leaking of carbon monoxide.

This is so important in terms of keeping you and your family safe. I would also urge constituents to get an audible carbon monoxide alarm, and if you already have one to check it is working properly.

“Energy companies can help give advice on how to save money and I would urge residents to contact their supplier to see how they can help. Smart meters can tell you how much energy you are using in real time and where you might be able to save money.

“Check what tariff you are on, and ask your energy supplier if they have any cheaper tariffs you can switch to, or use a comparison website to find the best deals from other suppliers.

“If you are struggling with your energy costs, the British Gas Energy Trust has schemes available to help, and you don’t have to be a British Gas customer. If you are struggling to pay your bills or can’t afford to buy more efficient white goods such as a washing machine and fridge, they may be able to help with advice and even grants worth up to £600.”
