Formby Maritime Cadets enjoyed their first boating experience

At the beginning of May, Formby Maritime Cadets joined up with the other units in the North West Area to enjoy their first boating experience. All the Cadets took part in Kayaking and Canoeing; some groups took the opportunity to raft their canoes together for a different experience.

Although some were a little nervous of their first session on the water everyone felt a lot more confident after some initial instruction and demonstration. By the end of the day everybody said they couldn’t wait for the next session which takes place on Sunday 4th June 2017 at Knowsley Outdoor Education Centre (KOEC), Lord Derbys’ Estate, Knowsley.

Once the boating was finished for the day the cadets had an opportunity to have a guided tour of the Centre. There are areas specially designated for activities such as Archery, Bush craft, and the Camp fire. The Cadets will have the chance to participate in these activities too at a later date.

Some Cadets decided to have a go at a leadership task of getting each other through the spiders’ web without touching the web. Everyone enjoyed trying to solve the puzzle and agreed it wasn’t easy.

The day ended with a giant game of tig before heading home.

Formby Maritime Cadets is open to all young people between the ages of 8-18 years old. If you would like to come along and join in the fun activities we do then all you have to do is turn up on a Parade Night. Parade nights are: - Tuesday and Friday 18.30 – 20.30 for Juniors and 18.30 – 21.00 for Seniors. It is Free for the first week so why not come along and see what we are about?

We would especially love to see more 12-14 year olds. If you want to try something different and like to get stuck in then why not give us a go. You will get the opportunity to take part in Kayaking, Sailing, Powerboating, and learn skills in subject such as Cook Steward, Communications, Rope work, Camp Craft and many others.

Over the next few months we have many more activities planned such as camps (weekend of 23/6/17), watersports (Sunday 4/6/17), boat trips and taking part in the Formby Festival to name but a few. We look forward to meeting you.

The Maritime Cadets is a charity that aims to create an environment where young people can reach their full potential whatever their circumstances.

We provide a balanced programme of activities that develops the whole person in an environment of social interaction and team working using a nautical theme based on the customs and traditions of the Royal and Merchant Navies. Young people progress through a rank structure as well as undergoing specialist training and be given the opportunity to attain awards and qualifications.

Taking part in the Maritime Cadets builds confidence and develops self-esteem. It requires persistence, commitment and has a lasting impact on the attitudes and outlook of all young people who join.

Our cadets are aged between: 8 - 11 Junior Maritime Cadets 11 - 18 Maritime Cadets

Demand continues to rise year on year. We have ambitious plans for growth, development and sustainability and we look forward to working with all our new networks in Formby as well as our existing networks to make our goals a reality.

Our achievements and growth have inspired us to be more ambitious and to set ourselves some challenging goals. Our starting point is the understanding that, if the Maritime Cadets & Sea Training Corps is good for the young people currently enrolled, then it is good for all the others not yet able to access the opportunities the Maritime Cadets & Sea Training Corps has to offer.

We are passionate about inspiring the next generation and creating a brighter future for them and their communities.

Our ambitions are to increase the number of young people enrolled in the Maritime Cadets & Sea Training Corps. To ensure that all young people who enroll in the Maritime Cadets & Sea Training Corps are put through a structured and enhanced training syllabus.

To recruit, support and recognise more volunteers from diverse backgrounds, to extend our reach and enable more young people to access the Maritime Cadets & Sea Training Corps. To expand and diversify the delivery partners we work with to extend our reach and increase numbers of young people who enrol.

To ensure that there is adequate resources and literature available to support volunteers in enhancing the experience for all cadets.

We hope you too feel inspired to get involved, support our work and create a brighter future.

If you feel inspired to get involved, support our work and create a brighter future for all young people, we would like to hear from you. Please email to: co.anson@maritimecadets.co.uk Facebook - Formby Maritime Cadets Website: http://maritimecadets.co.uk/
