Formby schoolgirl donates a foot length of her hair to help the sick children

Formby school girl Evie Leyland had over a foot of hair cut off for charity last weekend. Evie is 11yrs old and in Yr6 at Woodlands Primary. Evie was born 7 weeks premature weighing just 3lb 15oz and spent 5 weeks in special care. For the last few years, Evie has been under the care of Alder Hey hospital and has recently been discharged.
Evie's mum Gail told us: "Over the years, during her routine visits to the hospital, Evie saw lots of less fortunate children who were ill, including children who had no hair. One day she asked why they didn’t have hair. I explained to her that their hair loss was probably due to a side effect of treatment that they were having. It made her very sad."
"Evie was grateful for the fact that she had long hair and said that it was a shame that they couldn’t have her hair. I told her that there was a charity were people could donate their hair which is then used to make wigs for such children. Not long after we arrived home Evie came and told me that she had been on Google and had found The Princess Trust who turn donated hair into wigs for children. She asked if they would use her hair. After checking the guidelines, we found that she could. She had made her mind up there and then, that’s what she was going to do."
For the last 18 months, Evie has been growing her hair to make sure that she could donate at least 12 inches, which is what is required. On Saturday 13th May, Evie went to the hairdressers and her hairdresser, Sam, who has been cutting Evie’s hair for the last 6 years measured the length and was able to cut just over the required 12 inches.
Evie's mum Gail said: "When Sam first started cutting Evie's hair, she hardly had any and we used to get excited when we saw new hair sprouting! So it was only right that Sam done the honours today."
After the cut there were no regrets from Evie. She loves her new length but she is especially proud of herself for giving something back to help kids a lot less fortunate than her.
Well done Evie, you are a truly inspirational young lady and your family and Woodlands School must be very proud of you!
