Police Officers attend a dog related incident on Alt Road Formby

A woman was walking with her dog on Alt Road when an English bull terrier, which was roaming free on Alt Road attempted to attack her dog. The woman was bothered that other people or dogs might be attacked and rang the Police.

The woman said: "The police officer went to the home owner of the dog and the dog had escaped again! The police officer had to retreat to his car.... the dog was jumping up at the car trying to get to him! He then had to call the dog handlers to the street with shields and the right equipment to get the dog under control."

"The Police then went to see the owner, who is a frail man in his 80's with dementia who didn't even really remember what happened yesterday, and they called his son-in-law who came round. The son-in-law was very sorry! The Police started repairing the fence and the dog will not be kept outside any longer."

"The man is moving to a care home on Saturday and the dog is being taken to the RSPCA.

Due to that, they have not seized the dog, but they are going to check the property on Sunday/Monday to confirm if the dog is still there and if it is, the dog will be seized by the Police."

A spokesman from Merseyside Police said "We attended at Alt Road, Formby, following reports that a Bull Terrier type dog had escaped through a fence from a nearby property at around 18.15pm on Monday 24 April and attempted to attack a smaller dog that was being walked by its owner." "Neither the woman owner nor her dog were injured and the terrier was returned to its home by passers by." "Police have spoken to its owner and arrangements have been made to secure the fence at his property. As a result there is to be no further action."

The woman was relieved and said: "I feel awful because the poor dog has probably been bored out of its skull and was probably just happy to see us but, I have never been so scared in my whole life! So now hopefully, after the weekend, this won't be a problem any more."
