Due to strike action on Merseyrail, no trains running between 11am and 2pm today
Due to strike action Merseyrail will run a reduced service today, Monday 13 March 2017. Staff are walking out over plans for driver only trains. The industrial action will affect both Merseyrail services, hitting commuters travelling between Southport, Ormskirk and Liverpool; and Northern Rail, hitting services including Southport to Manchester.
The start of a 24-hour strike by Merseyrail began at midnight last night - and with it disruption across the network.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union will stage a walk out over driver-only trains (DOO) and the role of conductors.
When the new £460m fleet of trains arrive in 2020, drivers will operate the doors, meaning 220 guard roles will be lost.
Merseyrail failed in an attempt to block the planned strike on its network after filing for a court injunction. Frank Rogers, Chief Executive of Merseytravel said: “Industrial action is intended to be disruptive and it will be. While rail travellers will be most directly affected, other people travelling in and around the City Region that day are likely to be impacted as people take to the wider transport network. Consider when you travel and how, to play your part in keeping the city region moving as best it can.”
So today rail users will be faced with reduced services, with some services only running every half hour and winding down between 5pm and 7pm.
