Unquestionably one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century, it is set in Ireland in 1922, at the time of a terrible civil war. The war is the background to the struggles of a family living in a poor tenement in Dublin. (There are opportunities for an authentic and atmospheric set.) It is a play in which the real strength lies in the women. The men tend to be cowards, killers and drunkards.
